How often should you release podcast episodes?

Posting one podcast episode a week is the ideal number for most shows.

But which day should you post?

When you’re thinking about which day of the week to post your podcast, it’s important to think about when your ideal audience will most likely be listening.

In 2023, Spotify found that 78% of listening happens between Monday-Friday, so I’ve put together a schedule below to help you figure out which day is best for your show.

If you’re a more advanced podcaster and are interested in posting more than one episode a week but aren’t sure how to do it, message me on Instagram and we can figure it out together!

Which day of the week should I post my episode?

You can follow the below schedule as a general rule of thumb:

MONDAY:
Motivation, fitness, self-improvement, career podcasts
Take advantage of the ‘fresh start’ effect the comes with the beginning of the week. People are more motivated to achieve their goals, be productive and start the week off strong.

TUESDAY:
Business, finance, education, professional development podcasts
People are getting settled into their work week and are still feeling the inspired by the start of the week. They may be more open to information heavy content, and putting your advice into action.

WEDNESDAY:
History, science, psychology, investigative deep dive podcasts
Midweek slump, peopel may still have energy and the will to concentrate but they are starting to look for a side of entertainment too.

THURSDAY:
Relationships, culture, commentary, personal story podcasts
Nearly the end of the week but not quite! Peopel may start to gravitate towards more conversational content that doesn’t require as much brain power.

FRIDAY:
Comedy, pop culture, celebrity news, entertainment podcasts
People say not to schedule meetings for Fridays, podcasts are the same. People are getting into the relaxed/wind-down mood and are interested in lighter, more entertaining content to kick off their weekends.

Other things to consider if you’re serious about your show:

  • Who you are ‘competing with’ on that day. If there is an already established show that’s similar to yours, it might be best to choose another day of the week.

  • Batch recording so that you’re always a week ahead. This means recording two episodes at a time, so you’re never scrambling to get an episode out.

Feel free to DM me on Instagram or shoot through a message here if you need a little more help with this!

That being said…

Chopping and changing the day you release your episode is not going to bring in heaps of new listeners or increase your downloads. When I’m launching a show, I always think about which day your audience are most likely to be available and ready to listen BUT it’s a small drop in the podcasting ocean.

Your audience want a show they can rely on, and can look forward to every single week - something they know they can listen to on their commute every Tuesday.

So choose a day, stick to it for a few months and keep an eye on your downloads to see if they are spiking on a particular day of the week. But more importantly, make sure that day is working for you and your schedule.

Are you ready to work with a producer?

Most podcasters don’t need an ongoing producer on their show (yet!) but would really benefit from having one take a strategic look at their podcast and come up with ways to grow your unique show and audience.

If you’re ready to commit to your show and put some more strategy behind it, I offer podcast reviews and 1:1 consulting sessions. Both are completely tailored to your show and your goals, and include a strategy call to discuss how to grow your show. Click the buttons below to hear more about what that could look like.
